A Budget Traveller's Guide to 24 Hours of Festive Culture, Food, and Beer in Brussels
Last year, just before Christmas, my partner and I visited Brussels, a city that effortlessly blends history, culture, and gastronomy into a unique experience. As a budget traveller with a passion for art, food, and culture, Brussels was the perfect playground to explore without breaking the bank. Here's how I soaked in the city's vibrant atmosphere, culinary delights, and festive spirit in just 24 hours.

The Heart of Belgian Cuisine and Festive Markets
The Christmas markets of Brussels are a feast for the senses, offering a glimpse into the culinary soul of Belgium. Amidst the festive cheer, I was drawn to a Finnish stall where whole sides of salmon were expertly smoked over an open fire—a mesmerising spectacle to stand by and watch for a minute. The markets also offered the chance to indulge in Belgian staples: from Tartiflette, a comforting cheese and potato dish, to crispy Pomme Frites with creamy mayonnaise, and the sweet bliss of a Belgian Waffle topped with Nutella.
An Ode to Belgian Beer at Delirium Café
Belgian beer is renowned worldwide, and Delirium Café is its proud ambassador. With over 2,000 beers on offer, this café is a paradise for beer lovers. Sampling a variety of Belgian beers, including some notably strong brews, was an adventure in itself. The café's quirky ambiance and the camaraderie among locals and travelers alike made it a highlight of my Brussels experience.
A Spectacle of Lights and Architecture at Grand Place
The Grand Place, with its stunning light show, was a breathtaking sight. The square is surrounded by opulent buildings in the Baroque architectural style, notable for their decorative details, gold accents, and historical significance. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to Brussels' rich history and a must-visit for anyone wanting to step back in time.
Sweet Indulgences and Cultural Walks
A visit to Brussels in winter wouldn't be complete without a hot chocolate from Godiva. Their luxurious version came with a meticulously placed gingerbread man atop whipped cream—a small but memorable touch. Wandering through the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, I marveled at the glass-roofed arcade, a testament to the city's love for art and elegance.
Festive Finds: Champagne Bar Igloo and Stella Artois Chalet
The Christmas markets were home to the iconic Champagne Bar Igloo and the Stella Artois Chalet—a cosy, festive partnership that showcased the best of holiday spirit. Sitting in front of the iconic Champagne Bar Igloo, watching the huge ferris wheel spin, was a great moment, soaking in the lively atmosphere of the Christmas markets, and enjoying the good company. The buzz of the crowd, the chilly air, and having a great spot to just take it all in made it memorable in its own way.

From the festive markets to the architectural marvels, and the warm embrace of Belgian hospitality, Brussels offered a rich tapestry of experiences that catered to my love for culture and food, and my boyfriend's love for beer!
