My boyfriend Sam and I are lucky enough to be travelling to New York this autumn for a week in the hustle and bustle of the city. Ever since we booked, all I have been doing is writing down all of the places I want to go - and wow has that taken a lot of hours. Luckily for me, my TikTok page was full of suggestions and I enjoy making lists and all sorts of other organisational stuff that others may find mind-numbing. If you are one of those others… this post includes all of the details of my New York City Travel Guide, where I will be sharing all of my must-dos for visiting the Big Apple!

Autumn In New York

I imagine that embarking on my dream journey to New York City during autumn is akin to stepping into a vividly painted canvas, where the metropolis transforms into a mesmerising palette of warm hues and gently falling leaves. As the city bids farewell to the greens of summer, it warmly embraces the serene beauty of fall, making it an idyllic visiting season for any traveller - especially those like me who are enchanted by the magic of autumn's tapestry.

Central Park, at the heart of Manhattan, becomes a focal point to witness the fall foliage. The park, a sprawling oasis amidst the urban sprawl, begins its transformation into a kaleidoscope of oranges, reds, and yellows, painting a picturesque scene. For enthusiasts of autumn's charm or "fall" as affectionately termed by Americans, the city during this season must offer an unparalleled experience.

Based on the vibrant display witnessed last year, the peak of fall foliage graced Central Park in a breathtaking array of colors around November 5th, suggesting that the ideal time to experience the full glory of New York's autumnal beauty is from late October through early November. During this period, the city also embraces the cooler temperatures, making it perfect for strolls through the park, cosy cafe visits, and rainy afternoons spent in bookshops.

A Day Exploring The Upper East Side and Midtown Manhattan

Imagine a day when the cultural riches of the Upper East Side and the vibrant pulse of Midtown Manhattan blend seamlessly, offering an adventure that is as diverse as the city itself. This day doesn't just promise iconic landmarks and exquisite art; it's an ode to the soul of New York during the most picturesque season.

Our exploration begins with a foray into the world of art, where the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) stand as pillars of artistic expression. MoMA, with its avant-garde approach, houses artworks that challenge the mind and provoke thought, featuring masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh and Warhol. It's a place where modernism and contemporary art converge, offering a glimpse into the future through the lens of the past. Contrastingly, The Met, with its opulent European paintings section, invites you into a world of historical grandeur. Here, the works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh transport you to a bygone era, a testament to the timeless beauty of classical art.

The Upper East Side, with its stately townhouses and air of exclusivity, offers a glimpse into the lives of the city's elite, a nod to the fans of "Gossip Girl." A stroll might even take you past the iconic residence reminiscent of Nate Archibald's, where the lines between fiction and reality blur, offering a moment of delightful speculation.

Address for Nate Archibald’s Townhouse: 4 E 74th St, New York, NY 10021, USA

As the afternoon unfolds, the warmth of Ralph's Coffee becomes a haven for the soul. Nestled in this cosy spot, a cup of coffee in hand, it's the perfect backdrop for people-watching, a favourite pastime, as the city unfolds before your eyes. With coffee as your companion, a wander through the fall foliage of Central Park is inevitable, a natural masterpiece that rivals any found in the art galleries perused that morning. Notable stops like the Wollman Rink and Bethesda Fountain capture the beauty of the season.

Emerging onto Fifth Avenue, the grandeur of The Plaza Hotel echoes tales of elegance and opulence. Here, the magic of "Home Alone 2 - Lost in New York" lingers as a playful reminder of childhood adventures. The avenue, lined with luxury designer stores, invites window shopping as you stroll below big names from Cartier to Dior in the global fashion capital.

For lunch, head to Liberty Bagels on 5th Ave. Here, the humble bagel is elevated with a variety of flavors and toppings, offering a taste of New York's culinary diversity. This spot provides a casual yet quintessentially New York lunch experience, embodying the city's melting pot culture.

The day's journey culminates at Rockefeller Center, where the skyline views at sunset are nothing short of breathtaking. As the city transitions from day to night, the Empire State Building lights up, an iconic beacon in the city's skyline.

The evening's adventure leads to Korea Town for an authentic taste of Korean BBQ at Soju Haus, a culinary experience that embodies the city's multicultural heartbeat. To round up the evening, my football-mad boyfriend's chosen spot is Carragher's Liverpool Bar, wrapping up an exploration that captures the essence of New York in autumn.

Another Day - Another Borough: Brooklyn

The second day of this aspirational itinerary unfolds in the heart of Brooklyn, a borough renowned for its eclectic vibes, artistic streets, and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline.

The journey continues as you hop on the North Williamsburg ferry, gliding under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge towards DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). This area, known for its cobblestone streets and lofty warehouses, offers an iconic Brooklyn experience. The photo spot at Washington and Water Street, with the Manhattan Bridge framing the Empire State Building, is a must-capture moment of New York's architectural marvels.

With our appetites satisfied, its time for a leisurely walk through Brooklyn Heights. This neighbourhood, with its picturesque brownstones and leafy streets, offers a serene escape from the city's hustle. The Fruit Streets – Cranberry, Orange, and Pineapple – are said to be especially charming, each corner revealing a bit of Brooklyn's quaint residential life.

As the daylight begins to fade, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade calls. Walking along this scenic route, over the wooden foot-bridge towards Old Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Here you’ll find stunning sunset views over the river, with the Manhattan skyline providing a spectacular backdrop as the sky turns amber and the city lights begin to twinkle.
